There isn’t a single person who has not, at one time or another, experienced feelings of low self-esteem. It’s a part of discovering who we are and how we fit into the world. From our physical attributes to our skills and personality traits, there are many aspects linked to the way we view ourselves.

Here are some helpful tips on how to boost your self-worth.

Forgive yourself

We tend to be more forgiving of others than we are of ourselves. Our sense-of-self is affected by the way we judge ourselves.  Being overly critical and unforgiving of past mistakes can lead to a disproportionate and false sense of personal inadequacies. Instead, try practicing compassion towards yourself and letting go of past faults. It may be helpful to treat yourself as if you were a friend whom you cared deeply about.

We are so accustomed to the inner voice that controls our thoughts that we don’t question its detrimental effects on our self-worth. Not realizing that we are adversely affecting our self-esteem, we spend much of our energy on what we are lacking instead of focusing our strengths. We all have different talents and abilities, so to expect to be successful at everything we try is unrealistic. For this reason, it is crucial to our confidence to concentrate on skills we excel at. List what you like about yourself and celebrate those things.

Physical activity causes endorphins to be released throughout your body which elevates your mood and reduces stress. A balanced lifestyle that includes exercise can greatly contribute to your self-esteem by reducing depression, anxiety and making you feel good about yourself.  The mind and body connection is important to observe along your journey to a better self.
