Did you know that approximately 80% of New Year resolutions fail by February? We tend to think that resolutions can be attained through sheer will power, yet most require a change in behavior. While achievable, creating behavioural change takes mental and emotional effort that we’re not always prepared for. Sustaining your motivation well beyond the February slump can be realized through these practical considerations.
There are many obstacles to overcome when change is required. Don’t let yourself be one of those obstacles.
Know why you’re doing it
Understanding the reasons behind your motivation can deepen your emotional connection to your aspirations and keep you on the path to change. Take the time to examine how your goals will change your life. What will you have to sacrifice? What will you gain? What will happen down the line if you do not make any changes? It might be helpful to write down your findings so that you can review them when you feel your excitement and motivation dissipating.
Achieve goals with small steps
Creating mini goals within the larger goal is a practical way to succeed. The all-or-nothing approach usually sets us up for failure. The smaller steps taken will help in slowly changing your past habits and creating new ones. Be aware of your vulnerabilities
There are many obstacles to overcome when change is required. Don’t let yourself be one of those obstacles. Be honest with yourself about what may hinder you from fulfilling your resolution. Once you have identified this, develop reasonable solutions that you know will work for you. Planning ahead can provide immense support in vulnerable moments when we can’t think logically.

Team up with others
There are many benefits to joining forces with someone else or a group to meet your objectives. Being able to discuss the challenges with someone who is on the same journey can be tremendously beneficial. Likewise, having someone to hold you accountable is a great motivator to keep you on track. Also, achieving goals together can be more fun than doing it alone.
Be realistic about setbacks
As mentioned before, the all-or-nothing mentality just isn’t realistic. Creating change in your life is a learning process where you discover more about yourself. Take time to understand what triggered the regression and establish a solution you can utilize in the future. Small bumps in the road are inevitable and human. Just remember to move forward and don’t give up.
